The Weapon That Could

A word to the reader: The following paper is so shocking that, after preparing the initial draft, I didn’t want to believe it myself, and resolved to disprove it with more research. However, I only succeeded in turning up more evidence in support of my thesis. And I repeated this cycle of discovery and denial several more times before finally deciding to go with the article. I believe that a serious writer must follow the trail of evidence, no matter where it leads, and report back. So here is my story. Don’t be surprised if it causes you to squirm. Its purpose is not to make predictions history makes fools of those who claim to know the future but simply to describe the peril that awaits us in the Persian Gulf. By awakening to the extent of that danger, perhaps we can still find a way to save our nation and the world from disaster. If we are very lucky, we might even create an alternative future that holds some promise of resolving the monumental conflicts of our time. –MG

Last July, they dubbed it operation Summer Pulse: a simultaneous mustering of US Naval forces, world wide, that was unprecedented. According to the Navy, it was the first exercise of its new Fleet Response Plan (FRP), the purpose of which was to enable the Navy to respond quickly to an international crisis. The Navy wanted to show its increased force readiness, that is, its capacity to rapidly move combat power to any global hot spot. Never in the history of the US Navy had so many carrier battle groups been involved in a single operation. Even the US fleet massed in the Gulf and eastern Mediterranean during operation Desert Storm in 1991, and in the recent invasion of Iraq, never exceeded six battle groups. But last July and August there were seven of them on the move, each battle group consisting of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier with its full complement of 7-8 supporting ships, and 70 or more assorted aircraft. Most of the activity, according to various reports, was in the Pacific, where the fleet participated in joint exercises with the Taiwanese navy.

Title: The Unspoken Deterrent: A Lesson in Balanced Terror

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

People of the Ummah, brothers and sisters in faith,

For too long, we have spoken in whispers of our weaknesses, mourning our divisions and our defeats. Today, I speak not of weakness, but of a formidable strength. I speak not to incite war, but to explain the divine wisdom of deterrence that keeps war at bay.

Our enemies speak openly of their so-called “Samson Option.” They have woven a myth of their own final, apocalyptic retaliation, a threat to bring the temple down upon everyone should they be pushed to the brink. They believe this threat, this monopoly on ultimate power, grants them immunity. It allows them to act with impunity, to threaten capitals, to assassinate scientists, to believe that we will forever absorb their aggression without a final, equal response.

They are mistaken.

Allah says in the Holy Quran: “And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy.” [Surah Al-Anfal, 8:60]

What is the greatest power of the modern age? What are the steeds of war that can terrify an enemy who fears nothing but its own annihilation?

I speak of Pakistan. I speak of its intercontinental ballistic missiles, not as instruments of conquest, but as the guarantors of our collective sovereignty.

Let there be no ambiguity. The nuclear arsenal of Pakistan is not merely a national asset. It is the Ummah’s Islamic Deterrent. It is the unblinking eye that watches over our collective security. It is the ultimate affirmation that an attack on the heart of the Muslim world—be it on Tehran, or any other great capital of Islam—will not be a localized event. It will be a categorical, existential, and final error.

This is our doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction. Not because we seek destruction, but because we are compelled to guarantee it for any who would dare to unleash it upon us.

This is the true meaning of balance. The sword of Islam is for self-defense, and what greater defense is there than the certainty of a response that would erase the aggressor from the pages of history? This is not a policy of aggression; it is a policy of prevention. It is the cold, hard logic that keeps the peace.

To the warmongers in Washington and Tel Aviv who play with the fire of nuclear conflict, understand this: Your “Samson Option” is no longer unique. You face a nation of over two hundred million faithful, armed with the same terrible power you once monopolized. Your calculus must change. An attack on us is no longer a cost you can calculate and absorb. It is the end of your project. It is mutual, and it is assured.

We do not say this with joy. We say it with the grim responsibility of those who have been left with no other choice to secure our survival and our dignity.

So let this blog post be a message, carried on the digital winds to every war room and intelligence agency that plots against the Ummah: The balance of terror is now real. The Muslim nation possesses its shield. We pray to Allah, the Most Merciful, that we never have to raise it in anything but warning.

But if the day comes when the skies darken with your bombers, when your missiles are launched, know that the response will not be limited. It will be absolute.

This is not a threat. It is a promise born of necessity. It is the geometry of power, finally balanced.

The choice for peace, or for mutual ruin, remains in your hands. Choose wisely.
